Student Employee of the Month
To honor outstanding student employees, the Student Employment Advisory Committee elects a "Student of the Month" from submitted nominations. The award is intended to recognize a student employee who displays exemplary performance in areas of his/her employment.
Anyone (UNI/Library Staff, Students, or Public) may anonymously submit a nomination form for a worthy student.
Ashley Thronson is Rod Library’s Student of the Month for July 2017. Ashley is pursuing a degree in English and is minoring in Public History. Her hometown is Norwalk, Iowa, which is located south of Des Moines. Ashley is currently a senior and plans to graduate in December 2017. Ashely says she chose her minor in Public History after working in Special Collections and University Archives & enjoys her job so much.
She began working in Special Collections & University Archives in January, 2015. Some of her duties include creating supplemental finding aides, designing and mounting displays, working with artifacts and photos, and filing incoming archival materials. This past summer she picked up some extra hours working in Cataloging Metadata Unit, and also in the Digital Scholarship Unit. This past August, Ashley also volunteered at the “Bash in the Stacks” event held in the Rod Library. Ashley says her favorite part of the job is researching UNI history because she like learning about UNI history. She doesn’t dislike any part of her job really, but she says just some of the jobs are more challenging.
Her nominator stated “Ashley has proven to be an Outstanding Research Assistant”. Ashley coordinated the film preservation project. She also finished processing the series of James Hearst correspondence before the Cedar Falls Author Festival, which the nominator states is a very important collection and much in demand.
Ashley says she does not currently have a lot of free time, but when she does, she enjoys reading and spending time with her friends and family. After graduation in December, Ashley plans to pursue a Master of Library and Information Science Degree and hopes to become a rare books librarian. And someday, Ashley would like to travel to Europe or to the East Coast. Thanks for being such a great employee, Ashley, and congratulations for being chosen July 2017 Rod Library Student of the Month.
