Student Employee of the Month
To honor outstanding student employees, the Student Employment Advisory Committee elects a "Student of the Month" from submitted nominations. The award is intended to recognize a student employee who displays exemplary performance in areas of his/her employment.
Anyone (UNI/Library Staff, Students, or Public) may anonymously submit a nomination form for a worthy student.
Devin is the Rod Library’s Student of the Month for February 2020. He is a Finance major who has a special interest in the investments aspects of finance. He says he chose a Finance major because he likes following the markets. Devin describes himself as a risk taker, so it is no surprise when he says he is intrigued by the ups-and-downs of the markets, the opportunities to make returns, and the risk involved in investing.
Devin’s hometown is Iowa City. He has worked for three years in the Access Services Unit of the library. Devin currently serves as a Building Monitor, which includes responsibility for opening and closing procedures, ensuring the safety and security of the building when no permanent staff members are present, and, in Devin’s words, “Being the one others look to if anything goes wrong.” His other duties include helping to train new students, shelving, providing reference service online and in person, and checking out material. He says the best thing about his job is interacting with people, helping others out, and seeing smiling faces.
Devin states that he wanted to work in the library because he thought it would help him to study. He felt it would enable him to be in the library more often so he could keep focused on school work. He says he loves working in the Rod Library, that everyone in the library is friendly, and he is surrounded by a lot of bright people. Devin adds, “Just telling people I work in the library is rewarding. They seem to react well to it, and it gives me a sense of pride.” Devin’s approach to working in the Rod Library is exemplified by one of his Student of the Month nominators, who wrote, “Devin has the most positive, uplifting attitude. Other students, both his coworkers and patrons, smile when they see him because his happy disposition is so infectious. Devin is one of those rare employees who never seems unhappy to do his work, no matter the task.”
Devin is a senior who plans to graduate in December 2020. After graduation he would like to find a job in financial analytics, perhaps in Texas or in the Kansas City area. He says it’s often hard to find free time, but when he does he likes golfing, bowling, going to movies, hiking, or doing anything that gets him together with his friends.
Good luck on your future plans, Devin. Thanks for being such a great asset to the Rod Library, and congratulations for being chosen February 2020 Rod Library Student of the Month.
