Student Employee of the Month
To honor outstanding student employees, the Student Employment Advisory Committee elects a "Student of the Month" from submitted nominations. The award is intended to recognize a student employee who displays exemplary performance in areas of his/her employment.
Anyone (UNI/Library Staff, Students, or Public) may anonymously submit a nomination form for a worthy student.
Liz is the Rod Library’s Student of the Month for March 2020. She is a Choral Music Education major from Marion, Iowa. She will be participating in the Spring 2020 commencement ceremony and finish with her student teaching requirement in the fall. Liz says she loved being in choirs and extracurricular musical activities growing up and thought it would be great to pursue a career that would enable her to provide similar musical experiences to others. She says a turning point for her interest in music education was in sixth grade when she was cast in her first-ever role as a singing flower in a musical version of Alice in Wonderland. In addition to vocal music, she says she played oboe and percussion when she was younger, and continues to play the piano. Liz says she chose UNI because she knew both the music and education programs were strong here, and a visit to the campus left her feeling positive about the sense of community she encountered during her tour.
Liz has been employed in the library for two-and-a-half years and works at the desk in the Fine & Performing Arts Collection. She says she was inspired to apply for a library position after going to the fourth floor as a freshman to work on a project and thinking it would be great to work in the FPAC area in order to grow her musical knowledge and skills. Liz’s duties in FPAC include helping out with all of the fine arts media, LPs, CDs, DVDs, and scores. She also helps with questions from any patrons studying on the fourth floor. Liz says she loves the variety of her job, never knowing what she’s going to be asked about next. She says she really likes helping others with music related queries because it relates to and reinforces her career plans, and that she enjoys working in the Rod Library because there are opportunities for student employees to get involved in all kinds of activities, such as RodCon and UNI Now.
After completing her student teaching requirement in the fall, Liz says she would like to be a high school choir director. She adds that she would prefer to find a position in Iowa because the state has strong music programs, wonderful show choirs, and a great All-State Music Festival. Unsurprisingly, in her free time Liz likes to attend music-related shows and events and also enjoys performing when she gets the chance.
Good luck on your future plans, Liz. Thanks for being such a great asset to the Rod Library, and congratulations for being chosen March 2020 Rod Library Student of the Month.
